Tabora Cottage

Silkmore Lane, West Horsley

17. Tabora Cottage, Silkmore Lane, West Horsley

Built in the 17th Century, the only cottage on Tintalow Green before its enclosure in 1802.

Tabora Cottage was the only house to have been built on the Tintalow Green before it was enclosed in 1802. The oldest part of this cottage dates from the end of the 17th Century.

There is a 19th Century record of the copyhold owner, a mineral water manufacturer from Ripley named Albert Stansfield. His tenant, George Day ran the property as a fruit farm, and most of the land around was orchard at that time. Indeed, the house name then was ‘Woodhouse Orchard.’

Despite its significant age, this property is not a listed building and has been significantly modernised in modern times.
